Levira will set up two new solar power plants
17.02.2020
AS Levira will start the construction of another two solar power plants. One plant, with a capacity of 54 kW and expected annual power production of 57,600 kWh, will be built near Rakvere at Karitsa mast. The other, with a capacity of 32 kW and expected annual power production of 34,000 kWh, will be set up near Viljandi at Viiratsi mast.
Levira’s annual energy consumption is 11,500 MWh, thus making it one of the largest energy consumers in Estonia after industrial companies. Once the two plants will be in operation, Levira’s total electricity production capacity will be 110 kW, resulting in 120 tons fewer CO2 emissions. The expected completion date of construction is March 2020.
All Levira’s masts are equipped with UPS backup power supply systems and all major masts have diesel generators, which allows them to keep 90 percent of Estonia’s TV and radio broadcasting in operation during a blackout. “The end-October storms in Estonia proved the importance of communication services in emergency situations. Levira has created all the necessary conditions for the operation of masts without disruptions. Solar energy will increase the operability of masts even further,” said Tiit Tammiste, CEO and Chairman of the Board.
Levira’s first 30 kW solar power plant started to operate in the summer of 2019 at Uuemõisa telecommunications mast in Western Estonia.
Levira’s telecommunications masts are the tallest in Estonia (up to 349 m) and have the best power connections. In total, Levira has 22 masts covering the whole of Estonia and the company intends to set up a solar power plant at each of them. The masts are used by all Estonian telecommunications companies, TV channels broadcast in Estonia, and most Estonian radio stations, as well as security companies and various state and research institutions.
